Not only is mold annoying to deal with, but it can also become dangerous if it isn’t handled properly. Unfortunately, mold can easily form during construction. If your home or building is undergoing construction anytime soon, you’ll want to take all necessary precautions to prevent mold.

How to Prevent Mold During Construction

Moisture is the main factor causing mold, so reducing moisture is key in preventing mold. While there are a variety of factors that can contribute to moisture, like humidity, rainwater, and season, you can take some precautions to reduce the moisture. The two most important aspects of preventing mold during construction is the storage site and construction site.

Keep Materials Dry in Storage

The storage location is very important in preventing mold during construction. The location where you are storing materials should be dry and covered. Try to store materials under a sturdy roof and at least a few feet off of the ground. As moisture may be in the air, you can utilize plastic sheets to help keep the materials dry. In the case that the materials do get wet, make sure that they dry properly before using them. If your environment is particularly humid, consider using a dehumidifier. Finally, try to limit the number of time materials will be stored. If you can have materials delivered right before they need to be used, there is a lower chance they will get moldy.

Properly Prepare and Choose Construction Site

Both location and materials in the construction site are integral in preventing mold during construction. Moisture causes mold, so ensure that the construction site is properly equipped to handle any moisture, especially if you are in a particularly humid environment. Additionally, the construction site should have a high water table and drained land so that rain and snow can be redirected away from the site. Finally, do your due diligence on the materials used in the project. For example, subfloors are less likely to grow molds than other materials, but if left exposed for a long time, they definitely can still get molds. Awareness of how materials react to the environment and moisture is very important.
