The Most Common Spots to Find Mold in Your Home

Home Uncategorized The Most Common Spots to Find Mold in Your Home

Mold is something that we come into contact with every day. Mold spores live in the air all around us, in public spaces, and in other homes we visit. Even knowing that it isn’t a pleasant thought to imagine mold in your own home. Mold in your home can lead to an increase in asthma and allergy symptoms, as well as coughing and wheezing even for those without asthma or allergies. Take a closer look at these places in your home to discover where the mold is lurking.

Bathroom

Mold thrives in a warm and moist environment. Unfortunately, that’s exactly what your bathroom provides. Your bathroom can hold mold anywhere, but the shower is a common culprit. Check in between the tiles, around the faucet, and even on your shower curtain for signs of mold. You should also look out for damp walls and ceilings that give mold the perfect place to grow. Prevent mold in your bathroom by using the vent when you shower and keeping the door open whenever the bathroom isn’t in use.

Kitchen

The kitchen is the second most wet place in the home. Under your sink is likely filled with a variety of cleaners and kitchen supplies, giving the mold the perfect place to grow without your knowledge. Clean out your cabinets and look for signs of mold, as well as any leaky pipes that give the mold the moisture it needs to grow. Your fridge and pantry can contain mold from expired food. To prevent moldy food, pay attention to expiration dates and clean out your fridge on a regular basis. Don’t forget about the food splatter in your microwave too!

Basement

Basements are notoriously dark and damp places. You should inspect any pipes and drains in the basement for signs of mold. Around the foundation can be another common spot for mold if you have a leak that needs to be repaired. Older windows that hold condensation may cause mold to grow around the windowsill. To help prevent mold in the basement, use a dehumidifier. A dehumidifier will help pull the excess moisture out of the air and make it harder for mold to thrive.
